Continuity Between Beam Elements(Read 6385 times)
Continuity Between Beam Elements on: April 30, 2025, 05:22:43 am
Hello,

Is it possible to model a continuous beam element with differing Beam IDs?
For example, I'm wanting to model a tied-back soldier pile wall which has a concrete-encased footing.
Model 1 - Bare steel: Works as intended. No moment-release/pin noted.
Model 2 - Concrete-encased footing: It doesn't work as intended. There appears to be a moment-release/pin at the junction.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

You can create a continuous beam with different IDs by simply starting a new beam from an existing node of the previous beam. However, this approach doesn't work for tiebacks. Tiebacks are special beam elements generated using a closed-mode formulation, so they cannot be extended in the same way.

Thanks  for your response Roozbeh,

How is this achieved when using the "drawliner" command?
As "fromstrucnode" does not appear to be an option when drawing a beam element with an interface.

Thank you,
James

I am have the same question as James' when using "drawliner"

I've managed to connect beam one and two, but need to connect further to beam 3 and 4 (which interfaces with soil and rock dump)
I'd appreciate if you'll share, James, if you found the "hack"  ;)

(I am not able to attach image...)

Hi, It might be possible if you divide the beam into multiple segments and connect the ends to existing nodes. I haven?t done it myself, but it?s worth trying.

Hi KnutF,

Unfortunately, I never found a solution to this problem.

Thanks,
James

Hi James,

Please upload your script here and provide a detailed explanation of what you're trying to achieve. I'll review your model and see if I can identify any potential solutions.

Hi Roozbeh,

Thanks for taking the time to look at the scripts.
Please find the scripts attached.

Hi James,

I reviewed Model 1, and based on my understanding, it seems you're trying to measure moment in the tieback or it's connection with other beams. If that?s the case, unfortunately, tiebacks can't be used for this purpose. Please note that tieback and cable elements are one-dimensional and do not carry moment?they are designed to carry axial force only.

Could you please confirm if that?s what you were intending?
